Nvidia Reveals Project Shield Mobile Gaming Platform at CES

At CES, Nvidia announced Project Shield, the company's new Android-based mobile gaming portable console.

Developed as an open and flexible device, Project Shield will have access to both PC and Android games. As a pure Android OS (Jelly Bean) machine, Project Shield will have access to all of the games that currently reside on Google Play. Additionally, the  wireless receiver and GeForce GTX GPUs  will also allow the device  to stream games directly from a PC, as users will be able to access their STEAM game libraries from anywhere in their home.

The driving force for this new mobile platform is Nvidia's Tegra 4 processor. Delivering strong performance from its custom 72-core GeForce GPU and quad-core application of ARM's advanced CPU core, the Cortex-A15.  In addition, the device will offer strong battery life thanks to its battery-saver core and energy-saving PRISM 2 technology.

Project Shield will offer comfortable controls with its ergonomic controller, complete with dual analog and D-pad controls.

The mobile game console will also offer a 5-inch HD retina multi-touch display with a 1280 x 720 resolution and 294 dpi.

Additionally, the Tegra 4 with direct touch technology is going to allow the display to offer a more consistent and touch responsiveness than seen in standard touch devices. The device will also come equipped with a custom bass reflex audio system, which will offer twice the frequency of high-end laptops.

In additional to access from games from STEAM and Google Play, Project Shield will also be able to download Android-optimized titles available on Nvidia's TegraZone game store. The portal, which released last month, has already delivered more than 6 million downloads.  Additional media will also be available on Project Shield as the device will have access to Android third-partysoftware, such as Hulu, Netflix, and Slacker Radio.
