FaceTime Can Now Be Used on All AT&T Tiered Data Plans

Since Apple gave FaceTime the ability to work over a cellular connection, AT&T has been slowly adding support for this feature. Today, the telecom announced that everyone who has a tiered data plan with this telecom will be able to use it soon.

When FaceTime over Cellular debuted, it was only open to those AT&T subscribers with a Shared Data plan. Those with older tiered data plans were blocked. That is what's changing.

However, those who still have an unlimited data plan will still not be able make FaceTime calls over the cellular network. AT&T stopped offering this plan years ago, but allowed customers who already had the plan to keep it. It has put various restrictions on their usage, like blocking FaceTime.

AT&T says this change will go fully into effect "over the next few months".

FaceTime debuted years ago, but it was restricted to Wi-Fi connections until the release of iOS 6 last fall. Verizon and Sprint, two other U.S. carriers that offer the Apple iPhone, place no restrictions on FaceTime use. By blocking many users, AT&T has drawn criticism.
