There was a time when RIM could charge a premium for its top smartphones. That day appears to be past -- its next high-end model will reportedly be priced below the average.
Exactly what the BlackBerry Z10 will cost is not yet known, but an unconfirmed report says it will be "$149 or below". There is no word on what the price for its companion model, the X10, will be.
The Z10 will be officially announced at the end of this month, and will be one of the first devices with RIM's new operating system, BlackBerry 10. It will allegedly have 4.2-inch display. The X10 will have a smaller screen and a keyboard.
If this report turns out to be true, the lower price won't be an usual move. Nokia is also having to work to break into the U.S. market against tough competition from Samsung and Apple, and its signature handsets running Windows Phone debut at $100.
All of the top U.S. telecom's have committed to offering smartphones running Blackberry 10. Exactly when the Z10 and X10 will be released is not yet known, however.
