Nokia Lumia EOS Windows Phone with 41-Megapixel Pureview Sensor Coming in Summer

The 41 megapixel Pureview sensor found in last year's Nokia Pureview 808 (pictured), the company's last Symbian smartphone, will be supposedly be coming to the Lumia line of handsets later this year, according to inside sources.

The new Windows Phone model sporting the Pureview sensor will be known as the EOS, and it's scheduled to be released this summer in the U.S. Although this information comes from sources close to the company, Nokia has declined to officially confirm the rumor (though it has not denied it, either).

The idea behind the technology is that photos are intentionally oversampled since they're taken with a 41 megapixel sensor, but what is ultimately produced is a 5 megapixel image. This way, with the shot originally being taken at 41 megapixels, the camera can use the redundant pixels to eliminate noise in low-light photos.

The larger sensor also means larger pixel size, which Nokia says also helps improve photo quality. Pixel size has been shrinking over the past six years, according to Nokia, and the smaller the pixels, the few photons each of them can collect. Collecting fewer photons means poorer image quality and increased "noise" in low-light photos, so the larger pixels produced by the Pureview are a boon.
