LG has often been stuck in the shadows of smartphone hot shots like Apple and Samsung, but a recent announcement could help cement its place as a top company in the mobile industry.
During its quarter one earnings call this week, LG's Vice President of Mobile Business Yoon Bu-hyun confirmed the company will be releasing a smartphone with a flexible OLED display sometime in the fourth quarter of this year. The LG device would be the first smartphone to hit the market with a flexible display, although the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note III phablet is also expected to feature a flexible screen.
Due to obvious limitations with the rest of the components of the device, it's pretty clear the actual phone will not be flexible. However, the flexible OLED display should be nearly shatterproof and help to protect the screen against accidental drops and bumps and bruises.
