While we often talk about the more positive aspects of technology, new software, and the interconnectedness it brings to society, each of these carries its own potential pitfalls. Online bullying, for example, has made news with increasing frequency over the past several years, and now someone has taken it a step further.
Using Instagram, the account known as 'rats215' had attracted nearly 8000 followers this week before Instagram, working with authorities, disabled the account. The account had made a name for itself by posting disturbing threats and imagery related to witnesses of brutal crimes in the Philadelphia area.
The account promised to showcase these 'rats', as the user called them, so that the criminal community would better know who to target.
Police became involved only recently when it was discovered that rats215 had posted images of previous case evidence, as well as a shot of at least one witness that appeared to have been taken in the courtroom.
While the account has been shut down, the trouble it's causing for its creator certainly hasn't. Police excuted a number of warrants regarding the user account this week, in hopes that they can discover the person(s) responsible.
