Nokia rolled out another colorful accessory for its equally colorful handsets today: the new Nokia BH-121 Bluetooth Stereo Headset. Shaped like an older iPod Shuffle, with a square body and clip on the rear, the headset comes in four colors: cyan, red, yellow, and black (the printer geek inside of me wishes they'd gone with magenta instead of red).
Despite how small it looks in the pictures, the BH-121 actually seems a little chunky, measuring more than 1.5 inches on each side and, if you include the clip, nearly half an inch thick. The design is both literally and figuratively sharp, however, and fits the new Lumias pretty well.
If your phone has NFC, luck you! You'll be able to pair the new headset to your handset with just a tap. If it doesn't (sorry, iPhone users), the headset will still work, but you'll need to pair in manually via Bluetooth.
The BH-121 supports multi-point protocols, letting you pair the receiver with multiple phones or music players.
The feature that I find most compelling, however, is the fact that the headphones aren't built into the device. Nokia includes a matching pair of its WH-208 earphones, but since these things cost $10, don't expect earth-shattering sound. Fortunately, you can connect whatever headphones you may already own, and instantly make them Bluetooth compatible.
Nokia didn't give an estimate of the device's battery life, but given its size, you should be good for all-day listening. If you've got a Lumia 1520, Lumia 1320, Lumia 1020, Lumia 925, Lumia 625, or Lumia 525, you'll be able to check on battery status via one of your phone's Live tiles, with constantly updated information.
Unfortunately, Nokia didn't mention the presence of any advanced Bluetooth features centered on sound quality, including proprietary codecs like aptX.
The BH-121 will be available for sale soon, with an MSRP of €39, or roughly $54.
