Report: Motorola MPx, MPx220 release dates
PhoneMag has it from a "reliable source" that the first round of Motorola MPx units, with 32 MB of memory, will be shipping in December of this year, to be followed by the 64 MB model in Spring 2005. They also say that the Motorola MPx220 Microsoft Smartphone will be released first on the Cingular network, available October 18th.
This information about the MPx yet again points out the problem with smartphones and converged devices. The MPx was droolingly revolutionary when it was first announced, but by the time it makes it to market it will have nothing special aside from an unusual form factor and a gut-wrenching price tag. Between engineering delays and carrier approval, integrated devices can start out brilliant but eventually end up bland.
iPaq 4700 release date slips yet again
According to HP's Small Business sales website, the ship date for the iPaq 4700 has slipped back again, this time from September 21st to October 3rd. This comes just a couple days after the HP Small Biz store originally posted a date of September 20, then changed it almost immediately to September 21. Not a good sign.
Pocket PC port of Duke Nukem 3D
If you're a VERY long time reader of this space, you may recall that a little less than a year and a half ago we reported about a very ambitious French developer who had taken it upon himself to single-handedly port classic PC game Duke Nukem 3D to the Pocket PC platform. Now, it seems, he has suceeded.
There are a few catches. At this moment, the game requires a little fiddling to get working properly. Also, compatibility is far from guaranteed. However, if you're a sucker for nostalgia, it's hard to resist giving it a try. The port also works on Microsoft Smartphones.
Another photo of the Axim X50
They're just coming out of the woodwork. A PocketPC Thoughts user posted without comment a low-quality picture of the X50 propped up against a Dell keyboard and Dell monitor. Looking at it together with the rest of the Dell hardware, the black body with silver trim really starts to fall into place.
