PDA News - PalmOne licenses ActiveSync, Treo 650 sighting, Crippled Bluetooth?

PalmOne licenses ActiveSync Exchange Server Protocol

No, no, don't go having a stroke now. PalmOne is not dumping HotSync in favor of ActiveSync. But they are licensing the portion of the ActiveSync protocol for synchronizing with an Exchange 2003 server. What does this mean? Well, in the future PalmOne's business units will likely come ready to sync with Exchange email and calender systems right out of the box.

Treo 650 sighted on PalmOne website

There's been another sighting of the Treo 650 on PalmOne's website. This time the gaffe is complete with an image of three Treos sitting next to the large-print phrase "Treo 650".

I will give PalmOne this much credit, the page is not accessible from the rest of the site. It was discovered by a user changing page addresses specifically to find such hidden pages.

Reports: Sprint version of Treo 650 is Bluetooth crippled

File it under hoping I'm wrong. Several reports have filtered in from people who have had hands-on time with pre-release Sprint versions of the upcoming Treo 650. These reports say that the Treo will support hands-free equipment and Hotsync over Bluetooth, but will not support using the Treo as a dial-up modem for a laptop or other handheld.

This would make a sort of sense, since not only does Sprint have one of the fastest nationwide data networks, they also have the lowest price for unlimited data on their phones, so they wouldn't want someone just hooking up and using it as a laptop internet connection. The reason that it only makes 'a sort' of sense is that people can still connect their phones via USB or other cable, which reduces the ban on Bluetooth modem use from 'service restriction' to 'inconvenient lunacy'.

Off Topic: The Peacekeeper Wars

Alright, I don't usually abuse my pulpit, but I'm making an exception. Sunday night, October 17th at 9:00 PM Eastern, debuts the first part of Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars. It's a four-hour, $20 million dollar miniseries based on the critically acclaimed series Farscape, famously described as "the most irreverent, unpredictable, sexy, intelligent and exciting sci fi show on TV." (Matt Roush, TV Guide) The second of two two-hour parts runs Monday the 18th at 9 PM. In describing The Peacekeeper Wars, Executive Producer Brian Henson said that it is "probably the biggest production ever mounted for TV," adding that their only production hiccup was that they nearly used up "all the explosives in Australia."

Sunday, Oct. 17th, SciFi Channel. Check your local listings. And you may want to check out the primer, so that you know who the Nosferatu type in the black leather is.
