palmOne has launched a Special Edition Zire 72 that comes in silver. Before the conspiracy theories start flying, this is not a replacement for the standard blue model that some have reported a paint peeling problem with. All other specs are the same, only the case (painted plastic) is different.

I talked to palmOne directly about this product and they assured me the above claims are true. They went on to say that while the paint peeling complaints are very public and those with the issue are vocal and agitated; they are still seeing the problem occur in a very small percentage of units sold. palmOne maintains it's not nearly the epidemic it seems on these and other enthusiast message boards.

The Special Edition Zire 72 should begin shipping soon, in time for the Holidays. While I was not able to get a firm answer, it's my feeling that this unit will be available in a limited quantity until the Zire 72 is replaced in the spring.

A limited number of retailers are listing the Zire 72s at $299.99 including Amazon.
