The best note taking apps are pretty great, but sometimes getting information down in a professional environment requires a bit more than your everyday mobile keyboard or speech-to-text function can handle. Ten years ago, you’d have needed to bust out a mini recorder to capture all that audio, but today’s smartphones have enough internal memory to capably handle gigs of audio data. We’ve covered this ground for Android before, but if you’ve got a Windows Phone, your best bet is an app called Perfect Recorder.
First off, the app’s interface is just how we like it: a snap to figure out and easy on the eyes. One-touch recording is facilitated by tapping the large microphone icon in the center of the screen, which, naturally, uses your phone’s microphone to record.
Once you stop recording, a banner across the top of the screen gives you the option to listen back to the recording. On playback, the app goes old-school with a circular icon that resembles a record on a turntable, with easily recognizable Play, Pause and Stop icons. Saved files are categorized by date and can be played within the app itself. You’ve also got an onscreen slider control that lets you move backward or forward through a recording.
With the exception of its neat design and clever layout, this is all par for the course for your standard audio recording app, but if you dig into the app’s settings you’ll discover something a little less common: a “shake to start” feature that quick-launches a recording and makes capturing spontaneous moments a little more painless.
As for other settings, you can also designate recording quality, with sample rates ranging from 8000 Hz to 44100 Hz. You can store your recordings in your phone or upload them to cloud storage. Naturally, since Perfect Recorder is a Windows Phone-exclusive app, OneDrive integration is featured prominently. On the security side of things, access to the app and all its recordings can be safeguarded by adding a password, PIN or finger-swipe pattern.
Perfect Thumb, the app’s developer, is also responsible for a handful of other quality Windows Phone programs that include Perfect Note, Perfect Flashlight and Perfect Clock. All in all, Perfect Recorder is a straightforward app for something that should always be a straightforward task. It’s available now for free from the Windows Phone’s app store.
