HTC Droid Incredible vs. Motorola Droid: Which Is the Better Option?

The Motorola Droid and the HTC Droid Incredible are both high-end Android OS-based smartphones available from Verizon. Here’s a side-by-side analysis of the two similiar phones to help determine which is the better option for you.

HTC Droid Incredible vs. Motorola DroidThey have much in common. Both run the latest version of Google Android operating system, have 3.7-inch, WVGA touchscreens, 3G mobile broadband, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS receivers. They even sell for the same price: $200 with contract.

But there are differences, too. A major one is that the Motorola Droid has a built-in sliding keyboard while the HTC Droid Incredible does not. This keyboard, while not the best one available on a smartphone, nevertheless makes text entry significantly easier. If you expect to do a great deal of typing on your phone, the Motorola model is probably the better option for you.

Both smartphones run Android OS 2.1, but the Incredible has the HTC Sense user interface layered on top. This takes Google’s standard UI and enhances it. My favorite parts of Sense are a very handy home screen widget for previewing emails and another for Twitter, but that’s just a couple improvements. In general, it offers a better experience than the standard Android one.

I don’t cite this as a huge advantage for the Incredible because Android OS 2.1 doesn’t need a 1 GHz processor. The Motorola Droid runs just fine at 500 MHz. But it’s possible Android OS 3.0 or 3.5 might need a faster chip, and the Incredible is ready, while the Droid is not.

What is a big advantage for the Incredible is its 8 megapixel camera. The Motorola model has a 5 megapixel one that generally produces subpar pictures. This isn’t directly related to the number of megapixels, as there are good 5 MPx cameras out there. But the Droid’s is among the worst I’ve used, while the Incredible’s is outstanding.

HTC’s device doesn’t come out ahead in storage. The Motorola Droid comes with a 16GB microSD memory card, while the HTC model has 8 GB of built-in storage capacity. Still, it also has a microSD card slot, so you can add more capacity if you like. You can do the same with the Droid, but you have to switch out the 16GB card to do so.

Thanks to its large hardware keyboard, Motorola Droid is almost certainly the better option for anyone who expects to do a great deal of text entry on their phone, but the HTC Droid Incredible’s better screen user interface, and faster processor makes it a better option for most other people.
