Big Blue says it has developed a new technology called 'strained silicon' that will create super-fast, power-efficient processors for handheld computers.

In recent months there have been numerous announcements of new Embedded Linux support for PDAs and other handheld personal computing devices. Additionally, a growing number of PDAs (and similar devices) are known to be in development that will offer Linux as their primary embedded operating system.
Sharp has announced a new PDA for the non-Japan market which features an embedded Linux operating system and a Java application environment. From a hardware perspective, the device is based on an Intel StrongARM system-on-chip processor. The user interface consists of a bright, full-color "quarter-VGA" LCD touch/display along with a built-in QWERTY keyboard (located behind a slide cover).

NEC released Monday its notebook-like handheld, the $899 MobilePro 790. The machine has a clamshell design similar to that of a notebook but is smaller. It also uses an operating system designed for handheld computers. The 1.8-pound MobilePro 790 comes with an 8.1-inch touch-screen display and a case measuring 1.1 inches by 5.2 inches by 9.6 inches.
