Rumors have begun circulating that Sony Ericsson is going to release a less expensive version of its upcoming P990 smartphone.
It looks like Sony Ericsson is going to try and keep up in the SmartPhone arms race by releasing a new device dubbed the P990 that is the replacement for the older P910. The P990 was announced today in London and will have Bluetooth, Infrared, Wi-Fi, 3G and a built-in FM radio. The P990 will run the latest Symbian OS, version 9.1. Scheduled release is for Q1 2006.
Rumors indicate that Sony Ericsson is developing a UIQ smartphone with a shape reminiscent of the Treo and BlackBerry.

In the recently released news that Tapwave is now out of play as a Palm OS licensee (they folded shop some months ago with an eye on restructuring, but now that too is powered off); my heart kind of dropped. While I was never a Tapwave Zodiac owner, I did appreciate the innovation they brought to the Palm OS. Much like Sony with their Clie line and Handspring with their Visor line, the music of tapping for information is becoming pass .
There was a ton of excitement when the PSP was released, a little more when people first found a hack in Wipeout that allowed rudimentary web browsing. In the latest firmware though, Sony has released a full fledged web browser that's actually very functional. With Sony clearly committed to the platform it will be interesting to see if they roll out more PDA oriented applications, like PIM software.
Sony is supposedly working on a tiny new laptop that will include a keyboard but will also be able to be used as a tablet.
