For the past year, we have seen the growth of palmOne, the hardware end of what used to be Palm Inc. to be the premier Palm OS player. With three model lines, palmOne has done well with carrying the Palm OS. On the other hand, we have not heard as much from PalmSource. Cobalt, or Palm OS 6, is the new release of the Palm operating system that we have yet to see in any devices. Right now, the largest Palm OS licensee is palmOne; Sony has backed out of the US and European markets (it still develops and sells Clie models for the Japanese market). So what have they been doing since the split? At the PalmSource European Developer’s Conference (September 28-29), PalmSource will be talking about its refocused company philosophy, as well as four new products to help them meet that refreshed goal.
We report this with a heavy heart, but in a meeting with bargainPDA.com, Toshiba has confirmed they have no plans to release the e830 or any other PDAs in the US this year. They went on to say that the US is not in their foreseeable roadmap for PDA product launches. They will continue to offer the e830 in Asia and other pockets of the world. While this is not an official exit from the PDA business, a la Sony, this announcement has roughly the same effect.
Sony, Toshiba, and Fujitsu-Siemens have all recently announced new models that won't be available in the U.S. There are several theories why, but no one knows for sure.
Sony has announced a Japan-only Clie, the VZ90. THe PDA features a bright 480 x 320 pixel display (3.8"), WiFi, Memory Stick and CF card slots, a huge battery and several multimedia oriented applications. It will sell for 80,000 Yen, roughly $730 US Dollars.
Starting this month, Sony will mass produce a relatively large, full-color OLED display. This is being used in the Clie PEG-VZ90, a handheld that was announced in Japan today.
Sony has announced the Clie PEG-VZ90, a multimedia-oriented handheld. This model will not officially be available outside of Japan.
We initially called it the Treo 610, well add 40 to that number and what do you get? The Treo 650 and that's the name we're sticking with for the next generation Treo that will have Bluetooth, a faster processor and better screen. TreoCentral.com has posted pictures revealing this upcoming device and we can confirm its existence based on other sources that have held and seen this product. Release date of the palmOne Treo 650? Well, we can only conjecture that it should be sometime in the Fall of 2004, likely around October.
