Google has put Gmail users through some pretty extreme redesigns in recent months, with the biggest being a new kind of organized inbox. Instead of the priority inbox that no one ever used, the basic Gmail column was changed to feature somewhere between three and five columns, each pertaining to a broad category of email.
The most recent mobile Gmail updates have brought this functionality to your smartphone. Unsurprisingly, many were upset with the change, as it made the mobile view a bit more cluttered.
If that change didn’t go over well, it’s unlikely that the next one will be much better. According to some digging around by Android Police, Google is prepping to roll out advertisements on mobile devices.
It seems like an obvious move for Google, as Gmail is one of the most widely used applications on all of Android. Hopefully Google will take time to implement the advertisements properly – poorly designed ads have been the bane of mobile users, especially on Android. While it’s impossible to say just how Google will roll out the new program, it seems unlikely that they’ll follow the current paradigms of shoving a banner ad at the bottom of the display.
Instead, it’s more likely to follow some of the same designs as the web implementation, with ads popping into or around your inbox that look more like other emails.
