Ever since HP announced that it was abruptly ending production of smartphones and tablets running webOS, there have been a series of unconfirmed reports saying that this company or that is interested in buying this operating system. The latest of these is Amazon.

HP webOSThe retail giant unveiled its first tablet computer earlier this week, the Amazon Kindle Fire. This ?will run a version of the Android OS, but with a heavily-modified user interface.

According to a report that surfaced this morning, HP and Amazon are in negotiations that could result in webOS changing owners. Also included would be any remaining assets HP acquired with last year’s purchase of Palm Inc., the original developer of the operating system.

If this report is correct, Amazon appears interested in releasing tablets running webOS instead of the Android OS. This would give Amazon full control over the operating system of its tablet, instead of depending on Google.

Whether the retailer is also interested in introducing a line of webOS-based smartphones is unknown at this time. It’s possible Amazon intends to create a whole ecosystem of mobile devices.

Another name of list of companies reportedly looking into acquiring the assets of the former Palm, Inc. is HTC. Samsung’s name was also on the lst for a while, but the company has made it clear that it isn’t interested.
