When Android 2.0 was released earlier this month, those with smartphones running the previous version began to wonder when they would get an upgrade. That date is apparently getting close for at least one device: a number of screenshots of Android 2.1 have leaked out showing the new version of Google’s OS is running on an HTC Hero.
The Hero debuted this fall with Android 1.5 and also HTC Sense, this company’s proprietary user interface that enhances the default one. Porting this UI to Android 2.0 has delayed the release of an OS upgrade for the Hero, but HTC has promised that one is on the way.
Apparently, the wait is almost over; several screenshots supposedly taken from a device running Android 2.1 and the Sense UI have emerged on the Web.
HTC seems to have opted to skip over Android 2.0 and go straight to version 2.1.
More about Android 2.1
According to unconfirmed reports, Android 2.1 is going to be a “bug fix” update for the current version, without any significant enhancements.
The leaked screenshots bear this out, appearing to be essentially identical to the appearance of Android 2.0, aside from the changes that are part of the HTC Sense user interface.
Android 2.1 will supposedly be released before the end of this year. It will likely be coming to a number of devices, not just the Hero. The Motorola Droid is almost certainly near the top of this list.
