The upgrade for T-Mobile’s Motorola Cliq to Google’s Android OS 2.1 isn’t going to be out by the end of this month, as had been promised earlier.

Motorola CliqA statement from Motorola on the company’s support forum says:

We’ve made a decision to take more time on the release to optimize the experience in some key areas. We are working hard to provide an upgrade to Android 2.1 as soon as we can. Our consumers’ experience is our first priority and we will provide an upgrade when we can deliver the best possible user experience.

The statement gave no specifics about the timing for the Android OS 2.1 upgrade for the Cliq will be available.

A similar system software upgrade for the newer Motorola Cliq XT has also been promised, but is not yet available. It’s possible the two will be released at the same time.

New in Android OS 2.1
The Cliq runs Android OS 1.5, and the upgrade to the 2.1 version of Google’s mobile OS will bring many new features, including much greater support for speech-to-text, allowing users to enter text into an application with only their voice.

In addition, “pinch-to-zoom” multi-touch has been added to the web browser, photo viewer and maps applications, and OS 2.1 offers enhanced weather and news widgets.

The upgrade for the Cliq has taken so long that Google is now in the process of rolling out Android OS 2.2. There has been no word on an upgrade to this latest version for either of the Motorola Cliq models.
