Shortly after the launch of these smartphone, their manufacturer admitted that they have problems getting a GPS fix. The issue is apparently straight-forward: in some situations, these devices are unable to determine their location.
Users of the Captivate and Vibrant who have having this problem can install GPSSamsungRestore from the Android Market.
As its name suggests, this app will restore the factory-default GPS settings. Many find this counter-intuitive, as these smartphones had problems with getting a location fix from the beginning. Nevertheless, early reports on this software indicate that it helps.
The problems with getting a GPS fix extends to more than just the Samsung Captivate and Vibrant — the other two U.S. models in the Galaxy S series also have the same issue.
However, so far there have been no remedies for the GPS problems for Sprint’s Samsung Epic 4G and Verizon’s Fascinate.
