Apple may have figured a new way to save space in future iPhones and iPads. On Thursday AppleInsider found a pair of Apple patent filings that describe “curved battery cells for portable electronic devices” and “non-rectangular batteries for portable devices”.
The publication speculated that these new batteries could be used in future iPhones and iPads. The reasoning seems sound, as curved batteries would allow the electronic manufacturer to save valuable space and ultimately make sleeker products.
Apple also alludes to this idea, noting in one of the filings that the batteries’ curves were designed to “facilitate efficient use of space inside a portable mobile device”. However, these curved batteries may not be limited to just mobile devices as Apple even notes in the filing that the curved battery could be used in a laptop computer as well. The curved design could also prove useful for Apple’s long-rumored iWatch.
