Apple has made an upgrade to iOS 4.2 available for the most recent versions of its smartphone, handheld, and tablet. The new version brings support for wireless printing to all of these devices, as well as other enhancements.

The most significant new feature for the iPhone and iPod touch is AirPrint, which allow these devices to send print jobs to wireless printers. At this point, the only printers that support this feature are the HP Photosmart, HP LaserJet Pro, and HP Officejet.

At one point, Apple said it intended to allow AirPrint users to send print jobs through a Mac OS X computer, but this feature has been dropped.

This operating system upgrade also makes the Find My iPhone (or iPad or iPod touch) feature free to use without a MobileMe subscription. This is a free download on the App Store, and lets users easily locate a missing device on a map and have it display a message or play a sound. Users can even remotely lock or wipe data from a lost device to protect privacy.

Big News for the iPad
iOS 4.2 is a very important upgrade for the iPad, as this tablet computer was still running iOS 3.2. In addition to support for AirPrint, it also brings multitasking and application folders, as well as the Game Center.

“iOS 4.2 makes the iPad a completely new product, just in time for the holiday season,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.
