Apple CEO Steve Jobs has officially announced the iPhone 4, the next-generation smartphone from this company. This will thinner than the current model, but offer a much better screen, faster processor, and other enhancements.

It lines up with the information and images that leaked out of Apple in recent months, stealing much of the thunder from Jobs’ announcement.

Apple iPhone 4 with FaceTimeA Significant Upgrade
The iPhone 4 will have 3.5-inch, 640 x 960 touchscreen, a significantly higher resolution than the 320 x 480 ones in all previous versions. It will offer 326 pixels per inch, so individual pixels are too small for the unaided human eye to discern.

It is going to run the latest version of Apple’s  on a 1 GHz Apple A4 processor, the same chip used in the iPad. Apple’s current smartphone has a 600 MHz processor.

The casing has also been redesigned, making the device about 25% thinner than its predecessor. The metal strips running around the outside edge serve as antennas for the wireless functions.

This GSM phone will support HSPA version of 3G, offering 7.2 Mbps downloads and 5.8 Mbps uploads. It will also have Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth, and a GPS receiver.

The iPhone 4 is going to have a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera with a flash. In addition to images, it will be capable of recording 720p video at 30 frames per second. And users will be able to edit videos with a mobile version of iMovie ($4.99).

It will also have a small front-facing camera for video chatting with an app called FaceTime. This is only for iPhone-to-iPhone calls, and initially will work only over a Wi-Fi connection, but 3G support is coming next year.

Not everything is being improved: despite expectations, Apple’s upcoming smartphone will not have more storage capacity than the current one.

Say Hello to iOS 4
Jobs has also announced that his company’s mobile operating system is getting a name change — it will be iOS 4 not iPhone OS 4, to better reflect the fact that it is the basis for non-phone devices, including the iPad and iPod touch.

At today’s event, Steve Jobs touted the presence if iBooks in this new OS, allowing users to read e-books on their smartphone.

Pricing and Availability
The iPhone 4 is going to come in two configurations: a version with 16 GB of storage will cost $200 and one with 32 GB will go for $300.

The smartphone will be released on June 24, and pre-orders will start June 15. It is going to be available on that day in the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, and Japan, while it will be released in 18 more in July.

In the U.S., AT&T will allow all of its customers who will qualify for a device subsidy at any point this year to buy the iPhone 4 at the subsidized price on launch day.

In addition, this carrier is going to continue to offer the 8 GB version of the iPhone 3GS for $100.
