There isn’t a whole lot of information about the handset just yet, but if a slide shown off by ASUS at a conference in Taiwan is any indication, the company will be bringing a smartphone to the US sometime in the future.
Dubbed the MeMOFone HD 5, the smartphone’s existence was confirmed when it was spotted on a roadmap slide shown off at the Hero Innovation Wow Experience portion of an investors call. On the one hand, it seems surprising given that the phone will be launched stateside and ASUS has never had a presence in the US smartphone market. On the other hand, this falls in line with previous statements made by ASUS chairman Jonney Shih, who has said that the company hopes to launch its smartphones in the US in 2014.
Obviously no details can be gleaned about the MeMOFone HD 5 from the slide (other than the fact that it will likely have a 5-inch display, given the name), so there’s nothing to be said yet about its specs, pricing, or release date. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see another Android smartphone maker throw its hat into the ring to see if it can compete with perennial champion Samsung.
