Audible has just announced that its Internet audio service can now be used by owners of Sony Clie Handhelds running Palm OS 5.2.

Audible’s audio service allows users to download and store audio titles on a Memory Stick. All supported Clie handhelds can play Audible formats 2 and 3, and a 256 MB Memory Stick can hold up to 64 hours of audiobooks, audio periodicals, language learning, readings, lectures, comedy, and other audio entertainment and news from

Clie models that can use the Audible service include the UX series and the TJ35. Earlier Sony models use a proprietary audio API that is incompatible with third-party audio applications.

All of these CLIE users are being offered a free trial AudibleListener membership, which gives users any two audiobooks from Audible’s collection of 6,000 titles, or one audiobook and one 1-month subscription to any of the programs in Audible’s Subscription Center, the only Internet audio news kiosk for subscribing to audio editions of national newspapers, magazines, original shows and public radio programs.

There are already versions of the Audible software for Pocket PCs and palmOne handhelds.
