CTIA /Pocket PC Summit – Las Vegas, Nevada

By Barry J. Doyle

Recently I had the opportunity to visit what is called the “World’s Largest Mobile Data Event” which ran from Oct. 21-24th at the Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas.  Although general photography and video of the show was restricted for attendees, the facilitators made the mistake of allowing me to be granted a Media / Press pass!  Being a Senior Editor and representative for, I decided to behave myself and try my best to make a good impression.  This site is obviously still up (even after I visited the FCC booth), so I guess my good behavior paid off.  Please enjoy the following photos I caught and some descriptions of the points of interest I found at the event.

Big Mistake!  Notice the “PRESS” access!  HA!

A huge banner welcomed visitors on the way to the main floor.

A shot of the main floor.  This was early before things got started.

Using this “WideRay infared kiosk, I was able to download
an entire guide for the show to my PDA!

HP offered presentations geared to help users grasp mobile technologies.

Of course the New iPAQ Models were on hand for attendees to check out.

SanDisk had a cool display of their product line.  I had the
pleasure of meeting with Mike Wong, Public Relations Director
from the company to discuss the products.  I will provide
new information from our meeting in an upcoming article.

Bluefire displayed an iPAQ with their extensive “PDA firewall”
software which offers extensive security for concerned Wi-Fi

wavecom had a really cool display of their GMS /GPRS and CDMA chips used in
the Handspring Treo and other devices.

brother was demonstrating their cool new wireless mobile printers.

An iPAQ 3765 with a bar code scanner attached.  The text
below the scanned area is all recorded from just the small
scannable area above!

Here is Chris Leckness who is the creator and head guy of “aximsite”.  He was manning
the PocketPC Magazine booth.  What a nice guy!

Handheld Computing magazine had a booth as well.

AT&T featured displays of their wide selection of phones.

Mountaineers and sporty types, how about this for a tough

With a case like this, you don’t worry about dropping your
cell phone in the pool ever again!

Here is “yours truly”, with a famous cat.

A few girls from the Upoc Text Messaging company were trying to follow me around.
I guess BargainPDA editors are considered quite the catch these days!
