It has been known for some time that Dell plans to release its first Pocket PC with a VGA screen; however, what this device will look like has remained a mystery until recently.
There have been some images in circulation that were supposedly of the upcoming Axim X50, but some people were suspicious of them, as they appear to be computer generated images, not photographs taken with a camera.
Now, some additional pictures have been posted in the forums of handy.ru, a Russian web site.
These show that the earlier rendered pictures were essentially correct.
These pictures also confirm a few other details about the Axim X50. The most significant of these is the fact that this Pocket PC will have a CompactFlash slot and an SD slot located on its top.
In addition, it appears that the X50 will not have a jog dial; instead, it will have a pair of Up and Down buttons.
Other Details on the Axim X50
While Dell hasn’t officially announced this model yet, it has received FCC approval. Normally, all the documents that were filed with this government agency as part of the approval process are posted on its web site. However, a confidentiality request has been submitted to the FCC, which means that many of these documents are being withheld.
While the confidentiality request is keeping the FCC from revealing everything about the X50, by carefully scrutinizing the documents that are available, Brighthand was able to ascertain many of the details about this model.
It appears that there will be several versions of the X50. One model will have a 3.7-inch, 640-by-480-pixel (VGA) screen, a 624 MHz Intel XScale processor, and either 128 MB or 64 MB of RAM. A second model will have a 3.5-inch, 240-by-320-pixel (QVGA) screen, a 520 MHz XScale processor, and 64 MB of RAM.
One of these will have both Wi-Fi (802.11b) and Bluetooth 1.2 wireless networking. A second will have only Bluetooth.
Another detail that is included with the FCC filing is the fact that this handheld will use a swappable 1100 mAh battery, with a 2200 mAh extended battery available separately.
Not included in the FCC filing are the exact dimensions of the X50 yet, but according to one source, it will be approximately the size of the Axim X30.
The Axim X50 is expected to be announced on November 8. There has been no word yet on what the various versions of this handheld will cost.
