BrightBytes™: Treo 180, Total Remote, Sony, and More

Handspring has dropped the price of the Treo 180 to $249 with a service contract from T-Mobile or Cingular. This is a Palm OS smartphone that offers a monochrome screen and runs on GSM wireless networks. A GPRS upgrade is due in the near future. This price applies to both the version with a built-in keyboard as well as the one that uses Graffiti.

Griffin Mobile is close to releasing the Total Remote, which plugs into the audio out port on Pocket PC’s to turn the handheld into a universal remote control. It will go on sale for $30 on November 15.

Orange T665C Sony Electronics is introducing three limited edition handhelds in colored casings.. An orange T665C handheld with matching leather flip cover will sell for $350, plus white and black SJ30 handhelds with matching leather cases are available for $300. These will be available through the holiday season at retail stores or can be ordered from SonyStyle.

PalmSource has hired Albert Wood to be its chief financial officer. PalmSource is the subsidiary of Palm Inc. charged with developing the Palm OS, but is expected to be spun off as a separate company in the coming months.

Danger, Inc., maker of the hiptop wireless handheld, has announced that Hank Nothhaft has joined the company as chairman and chief executive officer.
