“Buggy” Beta of AvantGo for Palm OS 5 Available

AvantGo has made publically available a beta of its handheld application that is compatible with Palm OS 5 devices. Previously, people using the Palm Tungsten T or Sony NX Series have been unable to use the company’s service. It’s free, like all other versions of the AvantGo app for consumers.

As a beta, not a final version, it is not yet a finished product. At this point, it will only work with Windows PCs. Also, hi-res images aren’t supported. One of the major new features is the ability to save channels to removable memory cards; however, all the bugs haven’t been worked out of this feature yet.

The desktop software that comes with it works only with this version of the AvantGo app. It will not synchronize with any earlier versions of AvantGo on other handhelds.

The My AvantGo service allows users to download web content onto their handhelds to be read while offline. It’s one of the most popular Palm OS applications.

Earlier today, Sybase announced that it had agreed to purchase AvantGo and will make it a part of its iAnywhere Solutions subsidiary.

Thanks to Palm Infocenter for the tip.
