On Tuesday two Canadian carriers announced details on their expected launch of the BlackBerry Q10. The new QWERTY BlackBerry handset will be the manufacturer’s second device to run on its new BlackBerry 10 OS. The handset is expected to release in US and Canada fairly soon, helping the company to bolster the sales of its touchscreen BlackBerry Z10 handset.
Canadian carrier Rogers Communication Inc. reported to the Wall Street Journal that it would begin taking pre-orders for the Q10. The handset will be offered at around 200 Canadian dollars ($200) with a three-year plan, making BlackBerry’s new handset competitively priced with the BlackBerry Z10. However, the carrier made no mention of when Q10 would be available in stores; simply stating the device would be out “in the coming weeks”.
Telus Corp., another Canadian carrier, also told the WSJ that it planned to begin shipping the BlackBerry Q10 on April 29. Similar to Rogers Communication, Telus is also accepting pre-orders for the new BlackBerry handset.
The end of April appears to be a likely release date for both carriers; as Mobile Syrup released a leaked Rogers Communication document, indicating that the carrier plans to launch the BlackBerry Q10 on April 30. Since the information has leaked, Rogers Communication has also released additional information including that it will be the first (but not only) to offer the white edition of the BlackBerry Q10. However, the company has yet to confirm the suspected release date.
US Release Dates
Unfortunately, even in wake of this new information, it is still unclear when the BlackBerry Q10 will hit shelves in the United States. A RIM spokeswoman revealed to the WSJ that “Details on availability in other markets will follow soon.”
Likely the US will find itself lagging behind its northern neighbor. AP, CEO Thorsten Heins told Engadget back in February that the BlackBerry Q10 will arrive around 8 to 10 weeks after the BlackBerry Z10 hits US markets, meaning the Q10 can be expected to release sometime between May and June.
While RIM has yet to confirm such details, given the recent information, a May/June launch for the Q10 seems highly plausible.
