Cingular 8125 Gets Microsoft Direct Push Update

Cingular has released the MSFP Windows Mobile update that enables several features, most notably push email, for their 8125 smartphone.

More on MSFP

The most significant part of this software update for the Cingular 8125 is Microsoft’s Messaging & Security Feature Pack (MSFP). With MSFP, companies are able to deliver ‘push’ email to their employees using smartphones wirelessly connected to their Exchange  servers without the need for third-party software, hardware, or service fees.

Traditional email is pull email, in which a device periodically checks a server for any new messages. In push email, as soon as an incoming email arrives on the server, it is pushed out to the device, and the user is immediately notified of it.

Although much of the focus has been on MSFP’s push email functions, this software update also allows this smartphone to wirelessly synchronize calendar items, contacts, and tasks with Microsoft Exchange.

In addition, it allows over-the-air lookup of a company’s Exchange Global Address List (GAL), and security features for IT administrators, such as over-the-air device password policy enforcement and remote wipe of the device in case it is lost or stolen.

How to get the upgrade

More information on the Cingular 8125 upgrade can be found on Cingular’s web site, and it is freely available via this HTC support page.

This is a ROM update. As with any ROM update be sure to heed the warnings on the download page to minimize the risk of injury to your device.
