Cingular Reportedly Trying to Buy AT&T Wireless

According to Reuters, Cingular has made a bid to buy AT&T Wireless. If successful, this will create the largest wireless company in the U.S.

There has been no official announcement of this offer. Reuters only cites “a source familiar with the matter”. This helps explain why details are very sketchy. The amount of the all-cash bid is not known, though AT&T has a market capitalization of $27 billion. It also isn’t known whether this is a friendly offer or a hostile attempt to take over the company.

AT&T Wireless has apparently been unofficially on the sales block for some time. In the last year, T-Mobile, NTT DoCoMo, Vodafone, and several other companies have considered buying it.

AT&T Wireless carries a variety of smart phones and cellular-wireless handhelds, including the Treo 600, Motorola MPx200, and the BlackBerry 7280.
