Comcast has released a new version of its Xfinity TV player app for mobile platforms, upgrading the program to include the ability to download content directly to mobile devices, giving users the luxury of being able to watch their favorite TV show or movie whenever they please, even if they lack an Internet connection.

Available for both iOS and Android devices, the Xfinity TV Player app is free to download, however only Comcast customers will be able to access content, as an account username and password is required. With many smartphone owners carefully monitoring their monthly data caps, the ability to watch videos without gobbling up their data minutes is a big plus. The function is also appealing to those with tablets that lack wireless connectivity, giving commuters an offline library of their favorite TV shows and movies at their disposal for long trips.

Content is available for download over Wi-Fi connections, with videos including premium TV and movie choices from Showtime, Starz, Encore and Movieplex. Verizon customers can also download content to their mobile devices over the carrier’s 4G LTE network, as part of a partnership between Big Red and Comcast.

With a library of more than 18,500 movies and television shows streaming On Demand, Xfinity TV Player subscribers will have thousands of choices when it comes to what videos they can download.
