Compaq Computer will ship its millionth iPaq handheld computer this month, the company said Tuesday. The device, which was launched in May 2000, has quickly gained popularity. On Monday, market researcher Gartner issued a report predicting that the iPaq could surpass Palm handhelds in terms of revenue this quarter. The iPaq’s average selling price is about $300 higher than that of Palm’s devices, Gartner said.
Compaq also unveiled on Tuesday a new technology that will allow wireless-enabled iPaqs to be used worldwide. The company is developing worldwide tri-band GSM/GPRS (Global System for Mobile Communications/General Packet Radio Service) Wireless Data and voice capability for its handheld. According to Compaq, iPaq owners will be able to browse the Internet, handle e-mail and short messaging, and make phone calls. Compaq expects the new technology to be available later this year.
