The Tatung V620 was on display at the Microsoft Windows Mobile floor space at Computex this week. The device is a Windows CE 5.0 based personal video player that has an absolutely gorgeous screen, DivX video playback added in by Tatung and it’s not half as clunky and heavy as the existing Windows Media Center handheld devices.

Tatung (www.tatung.com) is a Taiwanese company that is certainly not a household name in the U.S., but they are well respected for their quality products in Asia. They make very nice notebook and Tablet PC devices. There’s even a Tatung University and Tatung High School in Taipei where they breed their engineers I suppose. The good news is that although their products are generally not available in the U.S., this device will be available worldwide! I actually spoke to a programmer working on the project for this device and he assured me they were going to have a final product in the next month and the release and availability would definitely be October, in time for the Christmas season. Tatung is customizing the device somewhat by adding such things as DivX playback support, something past devices have not offered.

Notice it says “Elio” on the device. That is not the name of the device, this is a beta version and the “Elio” is actually an existing Tatung device that’s simply a picture viewer juke box type of thing. This is a Personal Media Center/Personal Video Player device with a 20GB hard drive.
