Corning, maker of Gorilla Glass, has announced the creation of Willow Glass, an ultra-slim, flexible material that will be used on future devices such as smartphones, tablets, and personal computers.
Corning Willow Glass will support thinner backplanes and color filters for both OLED and LED displays in various portable devices. The new, ultra-slim glass will also help develop curved displays for mounting and immersive viewing on non-flat surfaces.
Additionally, the thinness, strength, and flexibility of the glass has the potential to be “wrapped” around a device or structure. It can also be processed at extreme temperatures that will enable the industry to pursue high-temperature processes.
“lDisplays become more pervasive each day and manufacturers strive to make both portable devices and larger displays thinner. Corning Willow Glass provides the substrate performance to maintain device quality in a thin and light form factor,” said Dr. Dipak Chowdhury, division vice president and Willow Glass program director.
The company is currently shipping samples of Corning Willow Glass to customers developing new displays and touch applications.
