Dell introduced three new Pocket PCs today, one of which is its first handheld with a VGA screen.

All three of these models offer wireless networking and two different types of memory card slots: CompactFlash Type II and SD.

The Axim X50 family members are the first Pocket PC handhelds to include the new Windows Media Player 10 for Mobile. This features Windows Media Digital Rights Management 10, which gives access to new subscription services, like CinemaNow, MusicMatch, and MLB.com.

Axim X50v

The X50v is Dell’s new flagship handheld.

It has a 3.7-inch, 640-by-480-pixel (VGA) display, giving it four times the screen resolution of most Pocket PCs. This display supports both portrait and landscape modes, and is backed up by a Intel 2700G multimedia accelerator, giving it the ability to do DVD-quality playback for video ranging from cartoons to full-length movies.

It runs Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition on a 624 MHz Intel PXA270 XScale processor. It has 62 MB of RAM available to the user. In addition, it has about 91 MB of internal storage.

The X50v has built-in both Wi-Fi (802.11b) and Bluetooth 1.2 wireless networking.

To show off the capabilities of its VGA screen, this model comes with two games: Enigmo from Pangea Software and Stunt Car Extreme from FatHammer.

The Axim X50V sells for $499.

The X50 Models

There are two more handhelds in the X50 family, each a scaled down version of the X50v. Both of them have 3.5-inch 240-by-320-pixel (QVGA) screens.

One of these models has a 520 MHz XScale processor, 63 MB of RAM available to the user, and 94 MB of internal storage. It has both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It sells for $399.

The final X50 model has 416 MHz XScale processor, 63 MB of RAM available to the user, and about 30 MB of internal storage. This device has Bluetooth and sells for $299.

A Few More Details

All three models have the same form factor. They are 4.65 inches tall, 2.85 inches wide, and .65 inches thick (118 mm by 72 mm by 15 mm).

All of the Axim X50 models come with a cradle with an extra battery slot that accommodates either a spare standard battery (1100 mAh) or the optional high-capacity (2200 mAh) battery. They do not include a flipcover or any kind of case.

The entire Axim X50 family can be ordered now from Dell’s web site. However, it won’t begin shipping for two or three weeks.
