This week Dell finally began shipping CDs that contain a fix to a nagging performance problem to select Axim X5 Pocket PC owners.
The performance glitch, first noticed by Axim users in late June, makes Dell Pocket PCs running Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 2003 operating system run slower than those running Pocket PC 2002. Dell acknowledged the problem in July and halted shipments of the device between July 16 and July 30 until it could resolve the issue. While it briefly posted the upgrade on its web site, it soon withdrew it when it discovered that some Axim X5 owners were using the update software to upgrade their handhelds to Windows Mobile 2003. Dell previously said it would release the update on CD in late August but did not.
In addition, Dell announced that on September 17 it would begin mailing a $29 upgrade CD to Axim X5 owners who wish to upgrade their handheld from Pocket PC 2002 to Windows Mobile 2003. The issue with the performance glitch also delayed this upgrade.
