Dell has announced that it is going to start selling the the Dell Streak directly to the public in July. This  upcoming tablet phone will run Google’s Android OS on a 1 GHz processor and sport a 5-inch touchscreen.

CEO Michael Dell has said that AT&T is going to introduce his company’s device at some point this summer, but Dell is also going to be selling an unlocked version that can be purchased without a service contract.

Dell Streak Tablet Phone with Google Android OSThis will appeal to those who want to use the Streak as a small tablet rather than a large smartphone.

However, no contract means no carrier subsidy, so the unlocked version will sell for $500. The price for AT&T’s version with contract hasn’t been announced, but is likely to be significantly less.

AT&T and T-Mobile?
AT this point, it’s not clear what wireless carriers will be supported by the version of the Streak Dell is going to offer directly to the public.

Given Michael Dell’s comments, AT&T support is a safe bet, and earlier this year, the FCC approved a version of this device with T-Mobile USA’s special 3G frequencies. Because this model will be sold unlocked, it could support both these carriers.
