DataViz, Inc. has just announced the release of Documents To Go Premium Edition version 6. This is the first Palm OS office suite to offer full native file support for Microsoft Word and Excel documents, which gives users the flexibility of using documents and spreadsheets whether they come via wireless email, are transferred from an SD card, or are synchronized from a computer. Other new features include a new user interface on the desktop and handheld, the ability to use password-protected files, and language tools such as spell-check and word count.
Before native document support, the Documents To Go desktop application had to convert Microsoft Office files to a special handheld format that the handheld version could use. Then the files had to be synchronized to the handheld. This somewhat cumbersome process is no longer necessary. For example, a Microsoft Word document or Excel spreadsheet in its native format can now be received as an email attachment, opened and edited with Documents To Go, and emailed back, arriving in its native format. Or a Pocket PC can beam a file to a Palm OS device with Documents To Go.
Documents To Go is the first Palm OS application to allow native Office files to be opened, edited, and saved. Quickoffice Premier, a rival Palm OS office suite, allows users to open and edit native Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, but these can’t be saved in their native formats.
This application offers embedded graphics, table, and font support in word processing documents. However, it’s not yet known if Documents To Go supports all the formatting offered by the desktop versions of these applications. Still, DataViz has a long reputation for offering superior support for the formatting options in Word and Excel.
Documents To Go version 6 isn’t restricted to native Office documents. Users will still have the option of using the special Documents To Go format. These files will be smaller than the native ones and will be able to take advantage of DataViz’s DocSync technology, which preserves all formatting on the original document.
Other New Features
While support for native Office files is the major new feature in this suite, it certainly isn’t the only one.
Documents To Go now includes a spell checker. It also comes with spell-check dictionaries for US English, UK English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. The appropriate dictionary is installed based on the language in which Documents To Go is installed.
Password-protected Word and Excel documents can be used in Documents To Go, allowing users to carry potentially sensitive information with them and safeguard it on the handheld.
The latest version also offers enhanced expansion card support. Users can now add files directly to expansion cards and use categories on expansion cards.
It uses an updated desktop and handheld user interface that makes adding files and changing file formats easier. For example, a file can be set to be synchronized as a Word or Excel file so it can be easily emailed or shared, as a Word To Go or Sheet To Go document to optimize size, or set to Margi’s Presenter-to-Go format for projecting (Margi Presenter-to-Go hardware and software is required). In addition, Documents To Go now offers selective sync so that the user can quickly synchronize just the one or two documents that need updating.
Documents To Go Premium Edition now includes Inbox To Go (formerly DataViz Mail). This allows users to synchronize email attachments in native Word and Excel format to make sharing files easy or choose optimized Documents To Go formats to save space on the handheld.
This software works with Windows and Macintosh computers. It can be installed on Palm OS handhelds running OS 3.5 or higher.
Documents To Go Premium Edition version 6 is available now from DataViz. It will be available by October 1 in office supply and computer retailers such as Best Buy, CompUSA, and Office Depot, as well as from online sites such as Amazon, Handango, and PalmGear. The suggested retail price is $49.95.
All previous Documents To Go customers can upgrade for $29.95. This includes customers who received Documents To Go bundled with Palm or Sony handhelds.
