Environmentally-Friendly Smartphones Sales to Skyrocket in Coming Years

A report by Juniper Research shows that sales of environmentally-friendly cell phones will reach almost 400 million by 2017, more than ten times the number that is expected to be shipped in 2012.

Samsung ExhilarateThese so-called green handsets are defined by this market-research firm as those containing half or more recyclable materials and are free of hazardous chemicals. The report believes that over half of the handsets will be green smartphones in five years’ time.

Sprint currently offers eco-friendly Android smartphones thanks to the Samsung Replenish approach. The “Green Handset & Tablet” report predicts that many carriers will follow the footsteps of Sprint and offer smartphones that are also made with recyclabled material. For example, AT&T is going to release the Samsung Exhilarate tomorrow.

As more vendors increase their involvement with environmentally-friendly handsets, the report noted that it is crucial for them to differentiate their products from the growing marketplace.

Additionally, other findings from the report include that mobile network operators can play an important role as the leader of green sales due to their unique customer-facing position and smart devices are smart because of cloud.
