First Thoughts RIM BlackBerry 7230

The BlackBerry 7200 series devices offer a phenomenal keyboard, serviceable display and an easy to navigate user interface. RIM s BlackBerry units are widely viewed as the best enterprise data devices, but how do they fare with small businesses/individuals?

I ve been using a BlackBerry 7230 on the T-Mobile network for about two weeks now. I have a full review coming in the next 7-10 days, but here are a few impressions so far. Note that I am using the device as a stand alone unit, without the BlackBerry enterprise server. The BES integrates with Exchange or Lotus to provide the ability to mirror the user s inbox on both the BlackBerry and PC, amongst other features.

What I like:

  • Phenomenal keyboard, better than any small keyboard I ve ever used
  • Light
  • Solid build
  • Easy to navigate UI
  • Great jog wheel, unit works well in both hands
  • Excellent battery life
  • Priced affordably
  • Good phone quality
  • Can charge via USB
  • Good signal reception

What I don t:

  • Non-enterprise users miss out on a lot of critical functionality
  • Lacks Bluetooth
  • Sometimes difficult to answer phone calls quickly
  • Dialing phone numbers can be tricky
  • Light on third party applications
  • No external memory support

  • The display is great indoors and in direct sunlight, but it s pretty weak in low-light situations
  • Lack of multi-media tools like digital music player
  • Doesn t work well when lying on your back
