First Thoughts: Sony Ericsson P900

by Reads (4,397)

I ve been using the Sony Ericsson P900 for a week now. It s a massive improvement over the P800, bringing a number of enhancements to the table, the most obvious a much better screen. The Symbian OS takes a little getting used to, so I ve geared these initial comments mostly to the hardware.

What I like:

  • Very light
  • Bright screen, huge improvement over the P800
  • Visually appealing cradle
  • Removable keypad
  • Smaller keypad than the P800
  • Jog dial is perfect for one-handed operation
  • Camera adds a small mirror to help frame self portraits
  • Decent stylus
  • Uses the same charger as all other Sony Ericsson products
  • Fast enough processor
  • Great battery life
  • New video recording feature
  • Easy personalization of the user interface via themes
  • MP3 s can be used as ring tones
  • Each address book entry may have its own ring tone
  • Character recognition software is nice, allows multiple ways to input each letter
  • Integrated Bluetooth
  • Nice file manager application
  • Good user interface
  • Aesthetically pleasing design

What I don t like:

  • Challenges around learning a new OS
  • Sync runs in background, no status shown on the P900
  • Low amount of internal memory
  • Camera quality is lacking, especially indoors and low-light
  • Seems to have a weaker antenna than my t68i
  • No hardware buttons makes gaming difficult
  • Feels much more like a phone than a PDA
  • Price, at $699 it s very expensive

Items of indifference:

  • Memory Stick Duo slot does come with a full size Memory Stick adaptor though

I ll be back in two weeks with a full review. If you have any questions, post them to the Sony Ericsson forum.
