Recently, Dell acknowledged that there is a bug in the version of Windows Mobile 2003 it created its Axim X5 models. The company has just announced it would post a fix for this on its support site in a couple of days.

Dell Axim X5 Pocket PC In June, Dell began shipping updated versions of its Axim X5 with Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC. Not too long afterwards, users in the Brighthand forums began reporting noticeable slowdowns with the new operating system. Dell responded by announcing it was working on a fix and, in the mean time, stopped shipping new handhelds.

According to, Dell will post a 28 MB ROM update on its support site on Wednesday that will return the Axim Line to full speed.

Earlier, PDA Buzz ran a report stating that this patch would be available on Saturday. That site now says this was in error and Dell never planned to release it before Wednesday.

Dell has now resumed shipping new handhelds. It continued to take orders for these on its website while it was working on the patch. The company says handhelds ordered today will be delivered no later than August 8.

So far the only Axims available with Windows Mobile 2003 are ones that have been bought since the launch of the new operating system. The upgrades Dell is offering for the older Axims have yet to begin arriving and the latest information says these aren’t likely to ship until September.

The ROM update Dell is posting is only for Axims that already have Windows Mobile 2003. It can’t be used to upgrade a handheld with Pocket PC 2002 to the newer version of the operating system.
