Even though Palm, Inc. isn’t going to announce it’s next smartphone for a couple more weeks, information on this device is already widely available.
The newest detail to emerge is the name for at least one iteration of this device. Palm announced a few weeks ago that Europe’s Vodafone would be the first carrier to offer its newest Windows Mobile smartphone, and a page on a Vodafone web site now has a clear reference to the “Treo 750v.”
It’s possible that this won’t be the name for all versions of this model. Some companies — like RIM — slightly change the name for each their models depending on which carrier is offering it. The version of the BlackBerry 8100 being offered by Vodafone is called the 8100v, for example.
More Details from the Rumor Mill
Over the weekend, several very authentic-looking pictures of the Treo 750 appeared on Tatsdiy.com — a previously unknown web site. This same site was updated today with some of the specifications of this device.
Much of this serves only to help confirm earlier rumors, but some of it touches on a couple of areas that have been hotly debated.
According to this source, the Treo 750 will not have Wi-Fi built into it. At one point it was thought this device would have this short-range wireless networking technology, as a description of this smartphone that leaked out of Cingular mentioned it. More recently, though, several other leaked descriptions of this model have made no mention of Wi-Fi.
The Treo 750 is supposed to include support for SDIO peripherals, so users will have the option of adding Wi-Fi if they choose. On the other hand, how well the external antenna on a wireless networking card will cooperate with the miniSD slot’s cover remains to be seen.
At hough this source doesn’t know the exact capacity of this smartphone’s battery, it’s described as thinner than the ones from previous Treos, raising the possibility that this model’s battery life will be shorter.
