Giving Thanks for the Little Things

This week in the US, and some other parts of the world, people have celebrated the holiday of giving thanks. For many, it proves to be a time of remembering those who do not have or even increasing one’s commitment to serving others. In terms of technology, I like to think of this season as the beginning to the sales rush; the beginning to the crappy customer service rush; and the expectation that manufacturers really did not give us a trick with fall releases, but gave real treats. With that all in mind, here is a list of some reasons thanks was given this season. And maybe next year, there will be even more to give thanks for.

  • Thanks to Tapwave for increasing the distribution channels for the Zodiac so that the rest of the world could join the US in using a wonderful grown-up GameBoy.
  • Thanks to Dell for making cost effective, feature laden PDAs which have made many first time PDA owners.
  • Thanks to palmOne for releasing new models, even if older users don’t like the paradigm shift.
  • Thanks to HP for releasing a slew of new PDAs; even though many will need a Christmas bonus to get one.
  • Thanks to cities, like Philadelphia and San Francisco, who look to make wireless internet widely available…and cheap.
  • Thanks to Microsoft, who with TabletPCs, SPOT watches, and Windows Mobile PDAs have covered the bases of mobility for nearly every user.
  • Thanks to palmOne who has figured out that smartphones should look like phones and act like phones (seeing people hold a BlackBerry to their head is like an SNL joke).
  • Thanks to PalmSource for releasing Cobalt. A bigger thanks comes when we can play with it on an actual device and not just a simulator.
  • Thanks to companies like Javoedge and Proporta who always seem to be right around the corner with a new accessory release to make owning a PDA a better experience.
  • Thanks to the Japanese market for getting all the bugs out of the cool new toys before we get them; though we would rather just have the cool new toys and figure the bugs out together.
  • Thanks to web retailers like Amazon and CDW (and the FCC too for that matter) for keeping our mouths wet for the latest releases with well timed snippets of information.
  • Thanks to movies like The Little Black Book that remind us to keep our PDAs secure at all times.
  • Thanks Apple for letting us know that we will never be completely cool without an iPod.
  • Thank you all PDA accessory manufacturers who have finally decided to include Bluetooth as an acceptable means to connect to other hardware.
  • And finally, thanks to BargainPDA for providing a balanced discussion forum and well informed editors who manage to pull out mounds and mounds of information and none of it sounding like other PDA news websites.

Happy holidays to all.
