After showing off a wireless charging orb at the unveiling of the Nexus 4 back in October, Google has finally released the highly anticipated accessory, making it available for purchase in the Google Play store.
Called the Nexus 4 Wireless Charger, the extra does just that, as it wirelessly powers the flagship smartphone using a Qi inductive charging standard. The orb can hold the handset in either landscape or portrait mode, while angling the device so users can still view the screen easily.
Priced at $60 in Google’s online storefront, the wireless charger was first made available through the third-party retailer Pure Mobile in late January and sold for the same price, with pre-sale shipments expected to arrive in a few weeks. Those who purchased the accessory through Google can expect it to arrive in a few days, with some customers already receiving a confirmation email stating the charger will ship on Feb. 16.
Despite its wireless moniker, the charger does require some connecting, as users must plug the charging mat into the wall. After that however, users are no longer restricted to a wire when charging their phone.
With its half-orb design, the Nexus 4 Wireless Charger will instill a bit of nostalgia, as it resembles the old Palm Touchstone wireless charger, which was used to power Palm’s Pre and Pixi smartphones. The accessory weighs just 130 grams and comes in black, with Google touting the charger as only needing four hours to completely charge the Nexus 4.
The Nexus 4 by LG has already seen success in the market, being sold out for weeks following its release. Yet, the handset will likely see another surge in sales thanks to its new accessory.
