GPRS wireless PDA due out from Palm 4Q 2002

Daren Ng, Palm sales director of South Asia/Australia and New Zealand , said last week that Palm plans on releasing a GPRS wireless PDA late this year. It’s not going to be an integrated SmartPhone, rather a successor to the Palm i705.

The GPRS upgrade of the i705 will allow for data speeds substantially faster than the current model with data transfer at rates of 56 to 144 kilobits per second. The i705 tops out at speeds of 14.4 Kbps. This unit will also offer always on service, similar to the i705.

The new unit will also be one of the first to use the Texas Instruments OMAP processor and the Palm OS 5.0. It remains to be seen if the screen will involve color or not, but Palm’s talking about this device being used for gaming. If that’s to be true, color could be a possibility.

This announcement in still in-line with Palm’s talks of releasing an integrated Bluetooth device later this year. Current indications point to a 3Q release, also with the ARM processor and OS5.
