Handspring Treo s due out next week
Details of the mid-level color Treo 90 slipped out last week. It looks like the 90 will join the expected Treo 270 as they are both due to be launched next week.
The Treo 90 illustrates a significant strategy change for Handspring as they move from the tiring springboard modules to the more popular secure digital format. Support for SD should make it substantially easier for Palm Pilot owners to switch teams if it were. The Treo 90 will also have an on-board keypad, coming in a shell very similar to that of the Treo 180.
The Treo 270 brings color to the mildly successful Treo 180. I still think the Treo 180 is the best integrated device on the market, executing major points fairly well. The color addition will make the monochrome almost obsolete. The selling price looks like $500, which is $100 less that previously announced. You may want to wait until this summer to buy though, when the Treo s work on Sprint s system. This will save you tons of cash because the Treo won t be such a minute hog.
Both of these releases come as Sony recently passed up Handspring for number two in Palm OS device sales. The Treo 90 will also provide the first real competition for the Palm m130 in the mid-range color market. Remember though, that rumors about a new mid-range Sony have been leaking out a bit. The race for domination stays hot!
