HP and Compaq: iPAQ spells end of Jornada-official! The spirit of togetherness goes unnoticed by Compaq’s mobile division… Compaq’s handheld computer will oust HP’s weak equivalent during the merger of the two companies, according to Simon Nelson, head of wireless mobile services at Compaq. Speaking to silicon, Simon Nelson said: “If you were to write that iPAQ would be the product to be continued over Jornado, you could never be criticised.” HP’s next PDA launch is inferior to the next iPAQ device in the pipeline, said Nelson: “I’ve seen HP’s next device and it’s very nearly equal to iPAQ, but we’ve got our next device ready to launch at the same time and we wouldn’t put out another version without making improvements.” Nelson said that huge growth in the PDA market stemmed mainly from iPAQ’s popularity: “Growth in the pocket PC market is very closely linked to the growth of iPAQ.” According to Nelson’s statistics, Compaq are second place for market share in Europe with 30.02 per cent on iPAQ sales alone, following Palm with 32 per cent, gained from the sale of five separate PDA models. “We’ve got the best product in this space. That’s why we’ve got the market share,” said Nelson “For comment on Jornado, just look at what other people have said,” referring to Jornado’s poor reviews. Nelson stated that the iPAQ offering was the only end-to-end PDA solution on the market, including a support centre based in Dublin for corporate users, whereas HP do not have services capability for Jornado. A statement issued by HP said: “HP’s Jornada and Compaq’s iPaq line of handheld devices will undergo a strategic review of strengths and core technologic competencies to ascertain the best mix moving forward.” Until the merger is complete, both companies remain competitors.” Heather McLean Silicon.com
